Women’s basketball fails against Delaware
ELON, North Carolina– Women’s basketball Elon fell to Delaware 65-87 on Sunday January 30 at Schar Center.
-Delaware jumped out early with a 13-2 run, giving them an 11-point lead with 5:23 into the first. Three pointers from Ajia James and Kayla Liles helped close the lead, but the Phoenix were still trailing the Blue Hens 11-18 going into the second quarter.
-Elon opened the scoring in the second period with an 8-2 run to bring the game under one (19-20) with 7:59 to go. Delaware responded with a 7-0 run and held Elon at bay for the rest of the half, extending their lead to 27-41 at halftime.
-Elon came into the second half hot, scoring five points in less than 30 seconds. However, Delaware outscored the maroon and gold 18-9 the rest of the period to grow their lead into double digits, including a 6-0 run in the final 1:35 to extend their lead to 18 ( 41-59) before the last frame.
-The Phoenix started the final quarter with an 8-5 run to come within 15 points of the Blue Hens (49-64), but Delaware held on for the victory.
–Brie Perpignan finished with a season-high 25 points, shooting 8 of 18 from the field and a perfect 8 of 8 from the charity strip. The guard also added six assists, four rebounds and three steals.
-Liles paced the Phoenix in rebounds (7) while collecting 18 points, two blocks and a steal.
–Peyton Carter and Bria Harmon combined for 14 points, five rebounds and one assist on the day.
-James had five points, three rebounds, a block and a steal during the game.
–Maya Johnson and Tyja Traore added three blocks each. Johnson matched his career high, while Traore set a new personal best.
-With the loss, the Phoenix drops to 10-7 (2-5 CAA) on the season.
Elon takes on James Madison on Friday, February 4 at 7 p.m. inside the Schar Center.
