UConn men’s basketball team adds San Diego graduates transfer guard Joey Calcaterra

The UConn men’s basketball team has added a little more backcourt depth through the transfer portal.
Joey Calcaterra, who has played for the past four years at the University of San Diego, committed to the Huskies.
Calcaterra is a 6-foot-3 guard who averaged 8.5 points per game and shot 34.7 percent from 3-point range last season, starting 23 of 29 games for USD. His best season came as a junior the year before, when Calcaterra averaged 13.3 points per game and shot 37.7% in 3 games in 12 during the COVID-shortened season.
While Calcaterra is a decent perimeter shooter, he’s hardly a one-trick pony. He can make plays on the dribble and has good feelings as a distributor.
UConn now has 11 scholarship players for the 2022-23 season, with two more scholarships open. The Huskies will most likely fill one more while leaving one open.
UConn will also be busy over the next two weeks in recruiting, with four official visits and three unofficials on file. The Huskies are set to welcome 2023 winger Jayden Ross from an official start on Wednesday, fullback Taison Chatman from June 19-20, small forward Scotty Middleton from June 21-23 and fullback Solomon Ball from June 24-26. June. All are 2023 recruits.
Meanwhile, 2024 goalie Boogie Fland and center Yves Missi are set to make unofficial visits this week, and 2023 center JP Estrella are set to make an unofficial visit next week.
