NFL on Nickelodeon, explained: Why the 49ers vs. Cowboys playoff game is on Nick
Nickelodeon will air its second NFL game in the past two seasons on Sunday.
Last season, the Nickelodeon children’s network aired its first NFL game between the Saints and Bears. While CBS acts as the main show, Nickelodeon’s show is more “kid-friendly” and explains the game to kids who may not watch football regularly.

Why does Nickelodeon show NFL games?
Last season, Nickelodeon aired the NFC Wildcard Game between the Saints and Bears as a chance to introduce young viewers to the NFL. Announcers, CBS’ Noah Eagle, CBS’ Nate Burleson and Nick star Gabrielle Nevaeh Green, help explain what’s going on in the game for young viewers to understand. Green often asks about what’s going on in the game.
After the success of last season’s game, Nickelodeon and CBS Sports signed a partnership ahead of the 2021 season to allow Nickelodeon to air at least one game again. They also introduced a serious new weekly “NFL Slimetime” which premiered this season.
Regarding the partnership, Nickelodeon President and CEO Brian Robbins released a statement explaining the significance of the deal.
“Our coverage of the NFL Wild Card game was literally a game-changer in so many ways, and the sensational response absolutely proved that there was huge demand for sports content with the kind of child and family perspective that only Nickelodeon can deliver,” Robbins mentioned. “In this next step in our tremendous partnership with the NFL and CBS Sports, we will raise the bar even further and help innovate sports programming to bring the whole family together for unique viewing experiences.”
How the Nickelodeon broadcast differs from the regular NFL broadcast
The Nickelodeon show is best known for its virtual effects, the main one being the celebration of virtual mud when a touchdown is scored.
Additionally, Nickelodeon plans to continue its virtual graphics this year, with its infamous orange used to show the first downlines, for example. They will also highlight an augmented reality airship that will fly around the stadium.
Pre-match and half-time shows are both scheduled to air, but information is unknown at this time on what they will be. During last year’s game, they showed a clip from the famous football halftime episode “Spongebob Squarepants”. Various Nickelodeon stars will also make appearances throughout the game.
But what really sets Nickelodeon’s broadcast apart is their “NVP Award,” which acts as their MVP award. Last year, Mitch Trubisky won the award.
Nickelodeon NFL 2021 Game Success
Nickelodeon’s broadcast of the Saints vs. the Bears last year resulted in their most-watched program in more than four years. The show generated around two billion impressions on Twitter, and it was the top trending topic that afternoon.
Clips of the virtual mud on the pitch have gone viral, along with videos of some of Nickelodeon’s beloved characters making cameo appearances.
