Men’s basketball delays comeback, 65-59

WATERBURY, Connecticut (November 27, 2021) – Stonehill College, which received votes this week in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll, took a 19-point halftime lead and delayed a second-half comeback of Post University to claim a 65-59 victory outside the conference. men’s basketball game at the Drubner Center this afternoon.

  • Senior Isaiah Burnett led three Stonehill players in double digits with a career-high 28 points, helped by 6 of 14 shots from three points away, with six rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.
  • Senior Andrew Sims added ten points and seven rebounds, while the second Jackson benigni totaled 11 points and six boards.
  • Senior David Jasson beat Post’s three in double digits with 23 points, logging on 4 of 9 with three points, three rebounds and two assists.
  • Senior Isaiah Holmes added ten points, six rebounds and six assists for Post, while his classmate DeVonte McCall had 12 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists.
  • Stonehill led up to 23 points (36-13) just before halftime behind a 28-2 score, 17 on five three-pointers by Burnett alone.
  • McCall scored the last four points of the first half to force Stonehill to settle for a 19 point (36-17) advantage at halftime.
  • Senior Myles Hanson scored the first basket of the second half to reduce Stonehill’s lead to 21, but Post followed with ten in a row to draw under 11 (38-27) after a jump from Holmes and triggered by three consecutive McCall’s.
  • Stonehill led by 15 (44-29) after a layup from Benigni, before Post followed with a straight eight from Jasson to close to seven (44-37) with 8:49 remaining.
  • A three-point game from Holmes brought Post down to two (50-48) with 4:42 on the clock, but the Eagles didn’t come close.
  • Stonehill followed with the next seven, including five by Burnett, including a run to the top of three points, to restore a nine-point cushion (57-48) with 3:35 remaining and the Skyhawks were able to see the game from the.

Following

Stonehill (5-1, 2-0 NE10) is back in action tomorrow afternoon when he hosts Molloy College for a non-conference clash at the Merkert Gymnasium at 1pm. Post (2-4, 0-0 CACC) hosts American International College Wednesdays at 7 p.m.
