Former Waverly High School grad publishes NFL Draft book
GRAND LEDGE, Mich. — Andy Phillips has always loved football. He spent all four years on the varsity team at Waverly High School.
“I had a great time,” Phillips said. “In my opinion, we never lived up to our potential for many reasons, but the experiences under the Friday night lights I would never replace. It really helped grow my love of the game even more . »
And received a scholarship offer from Central Michigan University to continue his love for the game.
“I ended up going there and I was moved to the offensive line during my redshirt year and I ended up starting 43 straight games on the offensive line and I played for great coaches, great teammates made lifelong friends, I met my wife there,” Phillips said.
With the goal of going pro one day.
He went to pro day hoping to be drafted by an NFL team and got a call from the Chicago Bears the weekend of the 2015 draft.
“I got a call from then-Chicago Bears offensive line coach Dave Magazu, rest in peace, and he also spoke to me a few times throughout the process,” said Phillips. “Here you go, it’s going to be a great weekend for you and your family, you know, I can’t wait to talk to you, it’s going to be very exciting.”
But when the weekend came and went, Phillips went undrafted.
“They didn’t recruit me. They didn’t offer me an unwritten contract and even on the first day they didn’t even offer me a trial,” Phillips said.
After dealing with this disappointment, Phillips became an undrafted free agent for the Green Bay Packers. He ended up being one of their last cuts in training camp.
“You know, I spent four to five months there playing in all four pre-season games,” Phillips said. of the best of all time in my team, in their teams.
After being cut, he decided not to return to acting but instead started doing something he never thought he would do.
“I’m like, listen, I have the passion. I’m going to start blogging on the side,” Phillips said.
He started writing freelance blogs and eventually managed to co-host a FOX Sports radio show.
Now he writes for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and decided to go out on his own to write a book about the NFL Draft experience.
“It’s called round zero“, Phillips said. “Basically everything that happens before the first round. So many things that people don’t know.
Phillips combines stories of players like Aaron Rogers and Brett Favre with coaches and agents, as well as his own story.
“I thought by getting a section of each, getting stories from a handful of people in each of those sections, I think I can really put the draft into perspective for a lot of people,” Phillips said. “It was amazing the stories I got for the book, things I’ve never heard, and I’m proud of everything there is to know about the history of the NFL. Those stories are amazing.
Shed light behind the scenes of a sport he and so many others love.
“If you love the sport of football, you love the competition and the draft days and you really enjoy what is one of the biggest weekends of the year,” Phillips said. “If you want to know what’s really going on inside and you just want to go one place to do it, that’s the book.
