Bryan ISD hires Calhoun to lead Rudder Lady Ranger basketball program
BRYAN, Texas – Coach Karla Calhoun brings college and professional experience as a player and high school experience as a coach to the Rudder Girls Basketball Program.
A Brazos Valley native who won a national championship with the Texas A&M girls ‘basketball team in 2011 and played professionally is the new head coach of the Rudder High School girls’ basketball program.
Karla Calhoun comes to Rudder after spending the past three years as a varsity assistant coach for the College Station high school girls’ basketball program, helping to lead the Lady Cougars to the state tournament.
Coach Calhoun looks forward to carrying his family message to Rudder High School as they build on the success of the Rangers program.
âI am so excited to be embarking on this journey with Rudder High School and the Rangers. Family is family, and I welcome the nation of governors as my extended family, âCalhoun said.
Calhoun succeeds outgoing coach John Shelton and inherits a Rangers team that has made the playoffs 12 straight times.
âCoach Calhoun is a great addition to Rudder High School,â said Rudder High School Principal Rachel Layton. âShe’s a successful basketball player and coach on many levels. She is from the BCS community and will be a great mentor for our Lady Ranger basketball team.
About the rental
Karla Calhoun graduated in 2010 from A&M Consolidated High School. During her high school career, she was nominated to be a part of the Candace Parker Aces, where she was able to travel to Japan and compete. Calhoun was also one of the first College Station players to compete in McDonald’s All-American All-Star Basketball Game, Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Basketball Game, Basketball Game All-Star ball from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and has been nominated for and played in many other All-American games for elite high school basketball players.
Calhoun continued her education as a student-athlete at Texas A&M University. She played a key role in the 2011 NCAA National Champion Team, the 2013 SEC Tournament Championship Team, and in 2014, she held the record for most blocks in a single season. During this time, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.
Calhoun continued his basketball career after his stint at TAMU. In 2014, she was invited to try with the US team as well as the San Antonio Stars. Calhoun also traveled abroad where she continued to perform professionally in Israel and Spain.
Returning to the United States, Calhoun officially began her teaching profession at Crockett ISD, as Head Coach of Volleyball and Assistant Coach of Basketball. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs basketball team have made back-to-back appearances in the regional tournament. In 2018, she joined the College Station High School girls’ basketball coaching staff as the university’s assistant coach. Meanwhile, the Lady Cougars made two appearances in the regional tournament and one appearance in the state tournament.
Karla Calhoun is married to Aleon Calhoun and they have three beautiful children, Kamora (3), Aleon (1), Aleiya (1). Karla is a family oriented person who enjoys making memories while spending time with her family. She is a teacher who shows compassion to her students as well as her players and is very keen to use her long life experiences to give back to the community.
