Baseball ends regular season with sweep of WKU in 5-4 win
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. –The Old Dominion baseball team closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 5-4 victory over Western Kentucky to sweep the series. ODU (38-15, 19-11) has now won seven straight and finished the second half of the conference schedule with an impressive 11-4 mark.
WKU (18-36) opened the scoring with an unearned first period run as Jackson Gray scored a single in the third and an errant pitch allowed Tristin Garcia to score.
The Monarchs went up to the board early in the second like with two outs Lincoln Ransom single and Kenny Levari drew a walk. Chris Dengler followed that up with his second homer of the season with a blast to left field and a 3-1 advantage over ODU.
After conceding a point in the second, the Monarchs scored two more early in the third as Thomas Wheeler starting with a walk and Josh Trujillo hit a two-run blast to right field, pushing the lead to 5-1.
starting pitcher Sam Armstrong found a groove allowing just two hits over the next four innings to finish the game with six innings and five hits to go with two strikeouts for his third win.
WKU put two more in the ninth as Noah Dean came in for the last three outs to earn his school-record 18and career safeguard. He broke Ron Walker’s record of 17 from 1992 to 1995.
Ransom and Dengler had two hits apiece to lead the Monarchs to home plate.
The Monarchs now head to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, for the Conference USA tournament which begins on Wednesday.
